As curator for the Winter Garden at the JC Raulston Arboretum, I have a bias for great winter gardens. That has everything to do with my rating the UNC Charlotte’s Winter Garden FUN!
The Winter Garden at UNC in Charlotte is, simply, well-done. There were some familiar friends, and some worthy new faces. As my good fortune would have it, UNCC also had a plant sale the weekend before my visit with some plants that didn’t sell. One of those plants happened to be Stachyurus praecox ‘Issai’, which topped my wish list. There is no doubt, if it had been blooming in the gardening during the plant sale, there would have been none for me to choose from! We have one in the JC Raulston Arboretum Winter Garden. Now I will have one in Helen’s Haven’s Winter Garden.

There was more winter interest to see in these gardens. Such as this from the Asian garden

very cool! i went to uncc, but haven’t been to charlotte in quite a while. winter interest is definitely “a good thing”.
You know how much I love a winter garden. So when I was heading to Davidson for the conference, I had to see it. It was lovely. H.
