Winter really is a wonderland even in the absence of snow. We are so fortunate in that we can garden year ’round. We have the weather and plant choice to add warmth to our winter landscapes. Adding fragrance, flowers, color, texture and form, will make your garden enjoyable every season of the year. The tiniest little flower in the winter would be lost in the summer sizzle, but in the winter, it brings hope and dreams and immediate enjoyment in an otherwise bleak season. BEYOND BUNNIES – ACCENTING YOUR GARDEN WITH ART
Accenting your garden with art is journey that begins with one piece. Adding garden art adds another level of interest and elevates the status of the garden. Learn placement of accents in the garden remembering that they are just that, accents. Learn when to expose a piece and when art should be tucked next to a plant only whispering for attention.
At any point in your gardening journey, a gardening coach is a helpful tool. Many come to us with dog-eared pages in magazines wanting a garden ‘Just like that.” The role of a gardening coach is to assist clients in having the garden they desire. This talk guides garden coaches in branding their business and how to go after target markets.
BUTTERFLY GARDENING – ATTRACTING BUTTERFLIES TO THE GARDEN
I view butterflies as a gift in the garden. In return, I give them a safe place to raise a family, bask in the sun, and visit often. Attracting butterflies to the garden is fun and easy to do. The rewards are innumerable. This presentation briefly discusses the lifecycle of the butterfly, highlights host and nectar plants and delights in the folly butterfly gardening leads. This presentation also brings awareness to the environment by providing a safe haven for butterflies and becoming a pesticide-free zone.
There is a great and deserving interest in container gardening. No doubt resulting from the diversity it offers and of course, as we all know, the best presents come in small packages. Container gardens can be enjoyed in a range of spaces from a small balcony, to a larger porch, deck, pool, window boxes and perennial beds. This talk will discuss design, plant choices and combinations and some time saving suggestions including products on the market to take the stress out of maintenance and keep container gardening enjoyable and rewarding.
Food, water, cover and places to raise our young. Sound familiar? The needs for a human family are the same for the wildlife raising their families. It is a simple to do and richly rewarding. Engaging children in this activity also teaches and aids our next generation of gardeners.
A Walk through your property will reveal what you may already have to provide a wildlife habitat. The National Wildlife Federation has a program to certify your backyard or community. The mission of the NWF is, “To inspire awareness to protect wildlife for our children’s future.” Whether you choose to certify your backyard or use this information as a tool to make our garden more wildlife friendly, you will not be disappointed with your contribution to the environment and creating a home for wildlife.
Vine are divine, adding charm, romance and intrigue to the garden. Vines also add maturity to the garden; an accomplished look only time can provide – without waiting years to achieve. Like an onion, a garden should look “finished” at first sight, and then slowly reveal layers of flavor. Hear suggestions of where to add another layer to places suc as porches, walls, steps, lampposts, and the mailbox. Learn how vines vine, best uses for sun and shade, and care and maintenance.

As our communities grow larger and closer together, out privacy diminishes. Learn how to increase our privacy with hedgerows – using single or mixed species plantings. While doing so, you are creating a wildlife habitat for many birds and insects. Beautiful examples of privacy borders and their application are used. The care and maintenance of hedgerows are discussed, as well, as plant combinations and use.

Wanting to lessen your footprint or just wanting to be practical, waterwise gardening is gaining a renewed interest. Waterwise gardening encompasses many basic concepts. Learning these basics on how to plan a waterwise garden, the right plant for the right place, and how to water properly, are just the beginning to designing a waterwise garden. This talk will also address the three main areas of waterwise gardening design featuring the Oasis, Transitional, and Xeric Zones, as well as, some plant recommendations for each zone.
